RF Shielded Enclosures

Clegg Industries builds RF shielded enclosures in our Victoria, TX shop. We shield shipping containers, modular buildings, military shelters, and trailers. Our own crew does the shielding. We do not subcontract it.

We have built for every branch of the U.S. military, federal agencies, defense contractors, and NASA’s space shuttle program since 1979. When you call us, a person picks up.

What Is an RF Shielded Enclosure?

An RF shielded enclosure is a room or shelter that blocks radio signals. Signals from outside can’t get in. Signals from your equipment can’t get out. You may also hear it called a Faraday cage or an EMI shielded room.

The walls are the easy part. The hard part is every place something passes through. That means the door, the power, the air, and the cables. A small gap in any of them can let signals leak. That is where most of our work goes.

What Is TEMPEST?

TEMPEST is a government program for keeping electronic equipment from leaking signals that someone could pick up and read. It matters most on classified projects.

Your project’s TEMPEST requirements come from the government’s TEMPEST authority, not from the builder. We build to those requirements. Our work is TEMPEST and STC tested by third parties.

RF Shielded Enclosure or SCIF?

RF shielding is one part of a SCIF. It is not the whole thing. A SCIF also needs sound control, secure doors, alarms, and a long approval process. A shielded enclosure becomes a SCIF only when a U.S. government security office accredits it.

Need a full SCIF? Start with our SCIF rooms page. Need shielding only? You are in the right place.

How We Shield the Openings

Our shielded projects show how we handle each opening.

  • Doors. EMI and RF shielded doors. On our SCIF builds, that is an STC 50 RF SCIF door.
  • Power. EMI and RFI power filters on incoming power. One mobile SCIF trailer has a 150-amp RF power filtering system.
  • Air. Honeycomb filters on the HVAC and secured AC venting.
  • Cables and antennas. Shielded pass-throughs and connectors for antenna lines, plus filters for secure data.
  • Walls, ceiling, and floor. RF shielding between double layers, or heavy steel plate inside the shell.
  • Moving parts. On one trailer, RF fabric seals around each of four slide-outs.

Where We Build RF Shielding

Shipping containers

We have converted 20-foot ISO containers into shielded rooms with heavy steel plating, rock wool insulation, and EMI and RFI power filters. The outside can stay looking like a plain container.

Modular buildings

We built RF shielding between double layers of walls, ceiling, and floor in a 14 by 51 foot commercial modular building.

Military and radar shelters

We built a 20-foot ISO radar shelter with RFI shielding, a custom shielded door, a raised computer floor, and a 4-ton AC unit. We also built an EMI shielded military shelter on vibration-damping mounts rated for extreme temperatures.

Trailers

We built a 53-foot shielded test trailer for a U.S. Air Force base. It has layers of specialty foil, RF fabric around four slide-outs, and EMI and RF power filters.

RF Shielding for Private Companies

Some private companies need shielding too. Think labs, test spaces, or rooms where sensitive talks happen. We build RF shielding for commercial clients when your risk calls for it. We will call it what it is, an RF shielded enclosure, not a SCIF.

One Shop Builds the Shielding and the Structure

Most shielding companies only do the room. Clegg builds the shielding and the structure it goes in. That includes the container, the shelter, the modular building, or the trailer. You get one contract, one team, and one quality program.

More From the Same Shop

Shielding is one part of what we build. The same shop builds mil-spec electronic shelters, specialty trailers, specialty vehicles, and custom metal work.

What to Have Ready When You Call

  • What signals or equipment do you need to block or contain?
  • Is this for a government program, or for private use?
  • If it’s for a government program, has a TEMPEST authority or security officer been named?
  • Do you need a fixed enclosure, a container, or a trailer?
  • Where will it sit, and what power is on site?
  • How many people and how much equipment go inside?

Don’t have every answer? Call anyway. We will help you sort out which questions matter for your project.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is an RF shielded enclosure the same as a SCIF?
No. A shielded enclosure blocks signals. A SCIF also needs sound control, physical security, and government accreditation.
Do you test the shielding?
Yes. On our SCIF builds, outside testers run RF testing and we hand you a written report.
Can you shield a trailer?
Yes. We have shielded a 53-foot trailer with four slide-outs, using RF fabric to seal around each slide-out.
Can you shield a shipping container or modular building?
Yes. We have converted standard 20-foot shipping containers and a 14 by 51 foot commercial modular building into shielded enclosures.
Do you subcontract the shielding?
No. Clegg staff in Victoria do the shielding, the electrical, and the fabrication.
Do you build RF shielded enclosures for clients outside Texas?
Yes. We ship across the country and overseas.
